Bulletin: Cacoethes, smoke?

The Cacoethes Publishing guestbook makes for some interesting reading (newest posts are first, I suggest reading from the last page back to the first).

From the guestbook...

"Okay and PayPal Automatically takes .38 cent right off your being paid off of what is left ... you book was on ARE or LS in Ebook (and a print set up fee for LS) format a initial setup fee for each title was taken out and they each have a different percentage that they take out Which is anywhere from 25 to 40 percent. ..."

"And according to my contract, setup fees and cover art are not taken out of royalties!"

"Next, honestly if you don't like the cover art on your book DO IT YOURSELF!! or Pay for a Different artist to do it."

The number one, cardinal, aboslute rule of writing is that money always flows towards the author. If you are paying one cent to your publisher for editing, cover art, "setup fees" then it is not a serious, professional, valid publisher. I'm sorry. I hate to see anyone caught in publisher kerfuffles. Goddess knows I've been through my share of them. I sincerely wish that those authors who want their rights back get them and that this gets worked out soon.

But please, if you have to pay a publisher for anything, stop! Don't submit your work! Money flows towards the author.

I see there's the usual stampede of Supportive Authors now... O.o

At least they didn't delete the dissent. but the usual 'mean girl' and 'just jealous' tropes are getting a workout.
