Ellora's Cave/Cerridwen are sending out a 10% off coupon code, is this a first? Are recent signs of increased activity at JJ incorporated pro-active good marketing or a knee jerk reaction to market downturn?

I hear Red Rose Publishing has a $100 kills fee, which they might need to retain authors if they maintain an output at the level of Ellora's Cave but, I suspect, not with the same readership?

Edited to add:
No Ellora's Cavemen this year?

From what I've seen, and heard, I think they simply realize they have gotten far behind the 8-ball on marketing and promo efforts, their bottom line is suffering, and they're scrambling to throw anything at the wall and see if it sticks.

Unless EC authors are making $10 per year (collectively, with more than one title), then...I'd suspect you're right.

EC's management has been dragging its feet on a hundred and one things it should've been doing years ago (like, just for example, distributing through vendors like Fictionwise and ARe), and I think they're beginning to realize their arrogant insularity has cost them market share. Of course, there've been other destructive decisions as well--too many to get into here.

Looks like Muhammad is being forced to go to the mountain.

There are Cavemen this year (2009) but not for 2010. They're trying themed anthologies dealing in the arts. Naomi and I got "rewrite this into a novella, it's not right for the anth" on our submission.

I wouldn't sub to RRP unless they cut back on the number of monthly releases. The Publisher could make more $ on the kill fee than on book sales. Maybe that is the point.
